There’s nothing quite like the thrill of carving through the water, powered by the steady pull of the wind. But what happens when the wind doesn’t show up as expected? Every kitesurfer has faced those frustratingly light-wind days, where the forecast promised wind, but reality has other plans. The good news? Light wind kitesurfing isn’t just possible – it can be an incredible way to refine your skills, explore new disciplines, and still have a fantastic session. Having spent decades on the water, I’ve learned a thing or two about making the most of low-wind conditions. Whether you're here at Kitekuda Kite Resort or kiting elsewhere, here’s how you can turn those light-wind days into golden opportunities.
1. Choose the Right Kite and Board
Your gear makes all the difference when the wind is light. At Duotone Pro Center Kappalady, we always advise riders to have a light-wind setup in their quiver to avoid missing out on a great session. Here’s what to consider:
Bigger kites: In lighter winds, you’ll want a kite with a larger surface area (13m plus) to generate enough power. Or pick one of our ultra modern DLab kites made from ALULA.
Foil kites: These kites have exceptional efficiency and drift better in super-light conditions.
Larger boards: A light-wind twin-tip with more surface area (wider and longer) helps keep you planing.
Foil boards: If you’re serious about light-wind kiting, a hydrofoil can transform your session. More on that below!
2. Master Your Kite Control and Body Positioning
When the wind is light, technique matters more than ever. Small adjustments in how you control your kite and position your body can make the difference between gliding smoothly and sinking into the water.
Keep the kite moving: Instead of parking your kite, generate power by actively steering it.
Efficient upwind stance: Lean back, engage your core, and shift your weight correctly to maintain speed without excessive resistance.
Perfect your water starts: A good technique ensures you pop up smoothly without unnecessary drag.
3. Try Foiling – The Ultimate Light-Wind Gamechanger
If you’ve ever watched someone effortlessly cruising over the water while everyone else is struggling to stay upwind, they’re probably on a hydrofoil. Kitefoiling is hands down the best way to make the most of low-wind conditions, and Kappalady Lagoon is the perfect place to learn.
Why is foiling so great in light wind?
Less resistance: The foil lifts you above the water, reducing drag and allowing you to ride in as little as 6 knots of wind.
Small kites, more fun: Unlike twin-tip riding, you don’t need massive kites – a 9m kite can be plenty in light wind.
Silent, smooth, and incredibly fun: It’s like flying over the water with almost no effort. Once you get the hang of it, it’s addictive!
At Kitekuda Kite Resort, we offer lessons and rentals for riders wanting to get into foiling. If you're interested, just ask, and we’ll set you up with the right gear and coaching!
4. Work on Your Freestyle Tricks
Light wind is the perfect opportunity to refine your skills. Since the crashes are softer, you can practice:
- Pop tricks without relying on strong wind
- Board-offs and grabs to work on style and technique
- Downloops and light-wind transitions
- Foot-switches for strapless riders
Even if you don’t land everything, these low-power sessions are great for training muscle memory and improving control.
5. Enjoy the Other Perks of a Low-Wind Day
Let’s be honest – we all love a full-power session, but sometimes, a relaxed low-wind day brings its own kind of magic. Here’s how to make the most of it:
Paddle out for a sunset SUP session: At Kitekuda, you can grab a paddleboard or kayak and head out to the ocean for an unreal sunset view.
Relax, connect, and enjoy the vibes: One of the best things about kiting is the people you meet. Kick back at Café Kuda, grab a smoothie, and enjoy watching the pros at work.
Final Thoughts
Low-wind days don’t mean wasted days – they’re just different opportunities to refine your skills and explore new styles of riding. Whether it’s getting on a foil, working on light-wind tricks, or simply soaking in the beauty of Kappalady Lagoon, there’s always a way to stay stoked.
At Kitekuda Kite Resort and Duotone Pro Center Kappalady, we love helping riders make the most of every session. Need a light-wind kite? Want to try foiling? Just ask – we’ve got you covered. See you on the water, no matter the wind conditions!
